Fair Treatment Of Gizenga Urged

NEW YORK, January 18

The United Nations Secretary-General (U Thant) has appealed to the Central Congo Government for fair treatment for the recently-deposed Congolese deputy Prime Minister (Mr Antoine Gizenga).

He asked the Congolese Prime Minister (Mr Cyrille Adoula) that Mr Gizenga be dealt with “in accordance wah the law of the Congo” and that his rights be fully respected. The Secretary - General’s letter came after an appeal by Mr Gizenga for protection The la'ter also protested against censure by the Congolese Parliament In his note to Mr Adoula the Secretary-General offered United Nations assistance in protecting Mr Gizenga. In his letter to U Thant, Mr Gizenga described the recent motion of censure passed against him by the Chamber of Deputies in Leopoldville as “an arbitrary and shrewd manoeuvre.” aimed at paving the way for his imprisonment when he left Stanleyville. He said he held U Thant “responsible for his security ” The contents of the two

letters was published at the United Nations last night, although their exact text was not issued Mr Gizenga told U Thant he wished to draw the attention of world opinion to the censure motion voted by the Chamber of Deputies, adding that it could not have any value unless he himself was heard. Mr Gizenga said the “national common effort and the vital interests of the country" demanded an end to all arbitrary methods, and that legality and fundamental liberties be respected Channel Tunnel.— Danish plans for the construction of a tunnel under the channel between Dover and Calais will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport in London.
