ANTARCTIC VISIT

Admiral Tyree’s Plans It is expected that the commander of the United States naval support force in the Antarctic (Rear-Admiral D. M. Tyree) will leave Christchurch next week on what may be his last visit to the Antarctic this season. Admiral Tyree is expected to visit each of the inland stations to see that all is well for the winter. He will probably stay for two or three days at each of the bases Admiral Tyree is tentatively scheduled to return to Christchurch on or about February 5. About mid-Feb-ruary, a start will be made in closing some of the inland stations. The traverse parties will by then have ceased operations and men will begin evacuating to McMurdo Station in preparation for their journey home by either ship or plane Towards the end of February interest at McMurdo Station will be focussed on the nuclear power plant site on the slopes of Observation Hill: on March 1 the plant is scheduled to go into operation. Work is going ahead on schedule, and parts of the pre-packaged, power plant are being tested. This is expected to take a fortnight or more. With most of the major construction completed, men of the seabee battalion are putting the finishing touches to the whole project.
