NEW ZEALANDERS “A PARADOX”
Formal, Reserved, Yet Friendly IN .2 Press Association) DUNEDIN. January 18. New Zealanders are a paradox to an American who was in Dunedin today. Outwardly they are formal and reserved, yet he finds them the warmest of friends. The observer was Mr Albert Moldvay, a photographer of the “National Geographic” magazine, who has been impressed particularly by the the formal clothes and reserve of New Zealand women.
“Frankly, I’m intrigued." he said. “You set a great deal of store by convention—and it is not only the women You don’t see slacks and shorts on the city streets. One would expect With the dress and general outward appearance you would be stuffy, but that is far from the case. “I have been really amazed by your friendliness People will just drop everything they are doing and do anything for you. Quite frankly. I’m staggered. It is something I have not experienced anywhere else in the world." Mr Moldvay said.
Dunedin’s friendliness with the men of the United States weather shin Vance was the reason for his presence. Mr Moldvay said. He had just finished photographing the winner of the “Miss Vance” beauty contest. Miss Sandra Welch, with members of the crew, as part of a series to be published by bis magazine on American Antarctic operations. The contest, which he understood had been arranged spontaneously, was evidence of the friendship between the city and the ship.
Mr Moldvay added: “We could do with more Dunedin spirit in the States, and. personally, I don't think shorts and slacks on city streets are very elegant anyway, especially some I have seen ”
