Daysun Impresses In Otaki Gallop

*TM Press* Specuu Service

WELLINGTON, January 18. Seven Wellington Cup horses worked at Otaki today. The most impressive was Daysun. This did not, however, detract from the merit of some of the other trials, notably Floutulla’s and Ruve’s.

The Telegraph Handicap candidate D Day pleased when galloping with Disorder and *e hacks Provide (which was paired with the Anniversary Handicap runner Legion). nierwings. Trawlerman and Diamond Head also went well. A particularly good trial was run by Taumai, which K not engaged till Monday. The work was on the plough, which was slow near the half-mile and the trial grass, which was fast. On the plough they ran the true distance, but on the grass they were considerably beyond it

On the grass Lavish Countess 'Raklander) and Marwon (Gandey) went a mile in Imin 43 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec This was one of the better gallops Marwon is well. So is Lavish Coun which was not suited by oe going last W'eek at Woodville.

Taumai (Ganley) on the outer, had the better of Gitano (Raklander) over six furlongs in Imin 17 4-ssec. the last three m 40sec.

Gitano, a strong five-year-old. is one of the fancied runners for the Anniversary Handicap. Gay Defoe (Hampton) had the better of Burges (Skinner) after a mile Ln Imin 48 l-ssec. She last three fur-

longs in 42 4-ssec. They went fast in the middle part and were easing at the end. Gay Defoe worked wider out than most.

D. Day (Bowry) and Disorder (Dombroski) were together after five furlongs in Imin 3 l-ssec. They were both going strongly at the finish, and except that D Day carried the greater weight there seemed little to choose between them. Disorder will race on Monday. Robin’s Joy (Skinner) had the better of Summer Day (G. Jenkins) after six furlongs in Imin 23sec, the last three in 39sec No rider has been engaged for Robin's Joy, which is in the Camp Hack Handicap for apprentice riders.

On the plough Trawlerman (Skinner) on the outside and Diamond Head (Hampton) were going keenly after six furlongs, in Inrin 18 3-ssec, the last three in 40 l-ssec Golden Romance (Jenkins) which was with them till the last furlong, was eased down and finished 10 lengths back Both Trawlermen and Diamond Head seemed to have a good amount in reserve. Daysun (Ganley) and Floutulla (Raklander) were together after a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Floutulla’s work could not be faulted.

but during the gallop Daysun made an even deeper impression. He is not always good on the track, and his form is uneven but he finished on for fourth in the Auckland Cup. Buve (Bryce) was doing better than Studio (Langford) after six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec, the last three in 40sec. Studio, which had earlier been sent over the pony hurdles, was disappointing because he is usually a keen worker. The time, however, was good. Auriette, which is looking bettei now than when she returned from Australia, went fast early’ and completed her work with three

furlongs in 38 2-ssec. She was ridden by her trainer, J. A McFarlane. Legion (Tait), which had earlier dislodged his rider when a leather broke, jumped off four lengths ahead of Provide (Dombroskie), but the latter was with him after half a mile in 50sec.

Provide, usually a good track worker, was tried in a hood and permission will be asked for him to race in a hood on Saturday.

Gauntlet (Conway) went an easy round, increasing speed for the last three furlongs in 41 4-ssec. He worked easily and looks in first-class order. Uniflow (Dawson) and Flying Time (Hampton) began easily in the straight and increased speed at the six furlongs. coming from there in Imin 18}sec, the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. Both carried big weights and seemed to have had enough

at the finish, but it was a good gallop and they went fast down the back. Flierwings (Raklander) was going strongly when she beat Aratiatia (Meier) by a length after a fast half-mile in 50sec. Flierwings is in the Pencarrow and Camp Hack Handicaps. No decision has been made about which she will start in, but G. R. Edge will be on her if she runs in the former event and D Raklander if she runs in the latter. Flierwings was third at Rotorua at her only start in New Zealand thia season, but she showed form in Australia. The two-year-old Azir

(Langford) was clear of Le Plus (McFarlane) after a smart three furlongs in 40Jsec. Vitapointe (Skinner) was restricted to a round of threequarter pace, but she came the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. Catricia (Bowry) and Khorazami went three fur-

longs in Imin 3sec and finished together. Khorazami is in the Anniversary Handicap. He won that race two years ago.

Happy Venture, which does not seem to have been harmed by his heavy recent programme, was given easy work. He is to start in the Gloaming Stakes on Monday. The Otaki jockey, A. E. Skinner, will ride Goldish in the Ashhurst Cup on Monday, and will also be on Lucky Bird, Lorica, Hard Knocks and Oxford Don at the meeting. Skinner will then go on to the two-day Wairoa meeting.
