Racing FAR STEP BEST
Trials At Awapuni “The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NTH.. Jan. 18 Far Step and Damselle ran one of the best trials at Awapuni today when they sprinted brilliantly together over half a mile in better than 48sec. Over the same distance Orekawa showed improvement on Tuesday’s gallop and Challis and Gaynova, Green Rose. Ma Cherie and Fairoaks were others to please. Ma Cherie, especially, ran a sound trial for the Wellington Cup. Ei Ganador and Ardlui ran fast over seven furlongs with Revel Draw also excelling at the distance. Silver Pelt was another to work well over some ground and other good trials were registered by Apa and Shalott over six furlongs. Merry Bank. Samsi. Teneriffe, Faultless, Sir Loin and Bagush. while Silver Theme went exceptionally fast in a sprint over three furlongs. On the No. 1 grass, which was lightning fast, Far Step (Hulme) and Damsel! (Aitken) ran half a mile brilliantly in 47 3-Ssec, the last three in 35sec. Far Step may have held a slight edge, but for a youngster Damselle did remarkably well. She is to contest the" Fitzherbert Handicap and would have a chance on this gallop. Far Step will contest the Telegraph Handicap. Chance In Stakes Orakawa (Aitken) went much better than on Tuesday when he finished alongside Copper Joy (Taylor) over half a mile in 50sec, the last three In 37sec. Orakaw’a’s showing on Tuesday was baffling, but he has performed poorly in training at odd times. On race day he is a different proposition and he must be given a chance in the Wellington Stakes. Copper Joy is a place prospect in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Outcome (Sellars) was given a light task though he still ran Msec for half a mile, the last three in 37 3-ssec. He looks at his peak and must be respected in the Telegraph Handicap. Ma Cherie (Aitken) worked easily from the mile, picking up Bion (Shield) at the five furlongs and coming the last half in 50 4-ssec. the last three in 36 3-ssec. Ma Cherie was impressive, drawing out at the finish to win by two lengths. She has done very little since returning from Ellerslie and looks none the worse for it. Her recent form hardlv suggests a chance in the Wellington Cup. but she is a previous two-mile winner at Trentham. Good Times EI Ganador (Taylor) and Ardlui (Aitken) ran most impressively over seven furlongs in Imin 31 2-osec. the last three in the great time of 36 4-ssec and the half-mile in 50 2-ssec. El Ganador was doing his work really well and he should start favourite in the Ashhurst Cup on Monday. He is also entered lor Trentham. A definite decision as to w'here he will run has not been made Silver Pelt (Taylor) and El Greco (Blair) ran seven furlongs in Imin 32sec, the last three in 38Jsec with Silver Pelt drawing out effortlessly to win by two lengths. He is at his peak and will disappoint if he fails to show up in the Gloaming Stakes on Monday. No rider has been engaged for him. Apa (Aitken) and Shalott (Taylor) were well matched over six furlongs in Imin 16 1-5 sec, the last three in 37sec. It was a splendid trial. Both have pleased enough this week to be considered in the Anniversary Handicap. Doradeb (Sellars), which is in great order to race at Trentham on Monday, took Imin 15J sec for six furlongs, the last three in 39sec. Leading Contender Teneriffe (Slavin) held a slight edge on Faultless (O'Neill) at the finish of five furlongs in Imin 2 3-ssec. the last three in 37 3-ssec. Teneriffe is in the high-weight at the Ashhurst meeting and must have a chance on this trial Faultless was not disgraced and looks a leading contender for the Pencarrow Hack Handicap at Trentham. Silver Theme (Stoodley) could hardly have been more impressive when she ran 34 4-ssec for three furlongs. This filly is in great shape for the Fitzherbert Handicap. Rototane (Taylor) ran easily over three furlongs in 38 4-ssec and Red Returns (Aitken) and a Golovine gelding (O’Neill) took 38 l-ssec. On the plough Bagush (Taylor) pleased when he shaded Flockhart (Aitken) over five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec. the last three in 39 2-ssec. Bagush has thrived this week and will be hard to beat in the Camp Hack Handicap.
