Joint Venture For Thiess (N ,Z.P:A.-Reuter—Copyright) BRISBANE. Jan. 18. Thiess Holdings, Ltd., and the Peabody Coal Company, of America have formed’ a joint company to spend £lsm to develop the Kianga-Moura coalfield of central Queensland. This will include a new 100-mile railway from Kianga to Gladstone, a washing plant and other facilities to allow production to rise to 2m tons a year. The State Mines Minister 'Mr Evans) announced this yesterday. Peabody is one of the biggest coal mining companies in America, with annual production of 30m tons and sales of nearly £6om. Mr Evans also announced that Thiess had obtained firm orders for 3.4 m tons of Moura and Kianga coal over the next seven years for the Japanese steel industry. He said this was the largest overseas coal order ever received by an Australian company. It would provide Australia with more than £l4m in overseas income and mean great development in central Queensland.
Kammi No. 2 Well Progress (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 18. Over the last two weeks there have been further indications of the presence of hydrocarbons in the section of the Kapuni No. 2 well through which the drill has been passing. This is in line with what had been expected. This is stated in a progress report on oil drilling operations in Taranaki by Shell, B P. and Todd Oil Services. Since the last progress report 9? in casing had been set to a depth of 11,497 ft and the well which now had a "”ameter of 81in had reached a depth of 12 461 ft.
