The deaths of five persons in north Queensland were caused bj T a disease previ-; ously thought to infect only animals in Australia, a; pathologist has reported. The case histories were described in the “Medical Journal of j Australia” by Dr. R. A. Rim-[ ington, the Townsville Commonwealth Laboratory path-1 ologist. He identified the disease as melioidosis, a rare organic disease first found in Malaya. Dr. Rimington said veter- \ inary research was being' carried out by the Agriculture Department to determine ■ the extent of the disease tn animals. The amount of human infection was not known because no large-scale survey had been carried out.
