BIRDS SUCKED INTO JET

Electra Delayed At Sydney (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 10. A Tasman Empire Airways Electra sucked some birds into the jet intake of its inside starboard engine while taking off with 24 passengers from Kingsford-Smith Airport, Sydney, early this morning. The aircraft which was only a few feet off the ground at the time, managed to gain height and then landed again. Damage to the engine was expected to be negligible but an engine change, taking several hours, had to be made. The aircraft, due at Auckland at 6.5 a.m. arrived at 6 p.m.
