MONDAY (Before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.) INTERFERENCE WITH CAR ALLEGED Two youths, charged with unlawfully interfering with a car in Ferry road on January 7, pleaded not guilty, and were remanded on bail until January 22. Their names were suppressed. Sergeant B. D. Read said police in a patrol car noticed the youths under the open bonnet of a parked car. When the youths were questioned they said they were playing a practical joke on the owner of the car. They said they were going to remove the rotor from the distributor, then stand back and watch the owner try to start his car. OBSCENE LANGUAGE On a charge of using obscene language in Cookson street, Kaiapoi, on January 6, Kama Tauwhare, aged 30, a shearer, was fined £lO. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant Read said the accused, a passenger in a car which was double parked near a picture theatre, got out of the vehicle and used the obscene language while a constable was speaking to the driver. There was a number of theatre patrons about at the time. SHIP DESERTER An English seaman. Roy Harry Neal, aged 25. was remanded on bail pending deportation when he appeared on a charge of deserting from the vessel Port Fairy at Dunedin on October 31 last year. Sergeant Read said the accused was convicted of the offence in Dunedin, and had been in custody since November awaiting deportation. There had been no ships available to deport him. Mr N. H. Buchanan, for the Port Line, said the company had no objection to the prisoner being released on bail while awaiting a ship ASSAULTED YOUTH Robert Prescott Hamilton Jensen, aged 41. of Wellington, was remanded In custody to January 11 for sentence on a charge of assaulting a youth in a vacant section near Victoria square on the evening of January 7 He pleaded guilty Sergeant Read said the accused accosted the youth, and asked the youth to go for a walk with him. He took the youth into the vacant section and assaulted him.
