ATHLETICS Fixtures For Visiting American Athletes

AUCKLAND. January 8

Two of the United States's top half-milers, Stanford University star E. Cunliffe and national ehampion J. Dupree, wiil race against New Zealand’s Olympic champion. P Snell and national champion G. Philpott in the 880 yards at the sponsored international athletic meeting at Eden Park, Auckland, on Saturday week. January 20. Britain's fastest three-miler. B. Tulloh, and possibly the leading Australians, A. Thomas, former world two and three-mile record holder, and D. Power will race M. Halberg and B. Magee, the world’s two fastest three-milers, in 1961. over 5000 metres. Three other international events will be contested at the meeting, the first of six to be held in New Zealand in January and February. The American national colleges’ half-mile champion. J. Bork. and possibly 1959 PanAmerican decathlon champion. D. Edstrom, will race against New’ Zealand’s fastest, co-record holders B. Robinson and J. Taylor. over 440 yards. Edstrom will be matched

against the national champion, D. Norris, the decathlon champion, R. Williams, and one other New Zealander in the long jump and against Williams. P. Dallow. and K. White over the 120 yards hurdles. The hurdles is Edstrom’s specialty event, at which he has recorded 13.9 sec, O.Vsec faster than the national record of Dallow and J. Holland, and only 0.7 sec outside lhe world record. Sixteen New Zealand runners have been listed for the 5000 metres. They include the former Olympian. N. Scott, the roadrunning champion. R. Chase, the Olympian. J. Julian, and M. Hellier, who ran third to Thomas and Magee over three miles on December 16. In the half-mile, the top Americans and New Zealanders will be accompanied by B. Cosser (Auckland) and J. Davies (Waikato). who was placed third at the last national championships to Philpott and G. Hack (Canterbury). W. .Weaver (Auckland), who was second in the New Zealand title event to Taylor, will run in the quarter mile.
