OVERSEAS TEAM
Assurance By
Chairman
The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association would certainly send a team overseas this year, said the chairman of the management committee (Mr F. S. Ramson) at the opening ceremony for the national championships at Wilding Park on Saturday. After praising the standard of New Zealand players, Mr Ramson said it was only lack of finance which prevented teams being sent more often. There were 35,000 members of affiliated tennis clubs in New Zealand and that’ was only a beginning. He asked for recognition by civic authorities of what tennis was doing for young people. The championships were declared open by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) who paid a tribute to the facilities at Wilding Park and asked players to remember those of past generations who had made them possible.
The chairman of the management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association (Mr G. E. R. Atkinson) introduced Messrs Manning and Ramson. Mr Ramson referred to the absence of the president of the Canterbury and New Zealand associations (Mr A. M. Hatch) who is in hospital.
