Rugby League In S. Africa (N.Z.P A.-Reuter —Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, January e. Professional Rugby League for whites only is to be launched in South Africa, a stronghold of Rugby Union. Three directors of a company called National Rugby League Proprietary, Ltd., announced this at a press conference today. The chairman of the league's board, Mr Norman Lacey, said the object was to “promote the creation, introduction and development . . . throughout South Africa . . . of Rugby League.” Mr Lacey said the game would first be developed in Transvaal and Orange Free State. It was not certain wljen the first matches would be held. League would not be open to coloured players, as this would be a breach of the country’s apartheid laws. Mr Lacey, the chairman of the new company, is a life member of the Rhodesian Rugby Union.
