CANTERBURY B IN STRONG POSITION

DUNEDIN, Jan. 7. A polished innings for 73 by B. F. Hastings and a solid unbeaten 80 from X. Hignett then good bowling by W. Duncan put the touring Canterbury B cricket team in a strong position at the end of the first day’s play in its fixture against Dunedin Metropolitan on' Saturday. The match opened on a wicket inclined to be slow after heavy overnight rain. It took some spin and had a spot or two short of a tenth which made the ball lift, Canterbury batted first and made 265 in an innings which featured a fifth wicket partnership of 76 runs between Hastings and Hignett and a last-wicket stand between Hignett and K. Priest which added another 57 runs. The innings began badly when B. Shewan suffering from a badly cut upper lip received when fielding against Central Otago at Milton the day before, was caught in slips with the total at six.

I. S. Hartland and G. Barrett restored the position a little. Both were uncomfortable early in their innings but Hartland struck good form later.

Best Of Day The best batting of the day came when Hastings and M J. Bear were together. Bear made a stylish 15 and appeared well set for runs when he was brilliantly caught on the mid-wicket boundary from a powerful hook shot.

Hastings, then joined by Hignett, was in grand form and his innings included several fluent drives. He seemed well set for his century when he was run out as the result of a fine return. Hignett s first 20 runs were made in rather uncomfortable fashion and it was not until he was approaching his 50 that he hit top form. From then he looked a good batsman and hit the loose ball hard. His total included three 6’s and five fours. V. A. C. McArley, a former Otago Plunket Shield bowler, and P. Sharp, the off. spinner who played for New

Curtis, struck good blows for their side by dismissing the opposing openers, E. Watson and L. Watson, and J. R. Veitch, all former Plunket Shield batsman, before stumps.
