Mr Wheatley, Of Waimate
Mr John Wheatley, of Waimate, known more than 60 years ago as one of the best cricketers in Canterbury, will be 102 today. Mr Wheatley played representative cricket in Canterbury between 1882 and 1906. For some years he was the sole New Zealand selector.
Born in Australia, he started work with the Bathurst “Times” at the age of 14. Whqn he was 16 he came to New Zealand with his parents.
For 40 years, until his retirement at the age of 65. Mr Wheatley worked for the “Lyttelton Times.” He was a casehand, then a stonehand, and finally manager of the linotype room. Mr Wheatley has been bedridden at the home of his daughter in Waimate for more than a year. He has
22 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and in the last few months he has become great-great grandfather of two children.
