Recovery At Foot Of 300 ft Cliffs
The body of Mr George Watson, aged 58. who had been missing from his home at 63 Hawthorne road, Papanui, since Wednesday evening, was found on rocks at the foot of 300 ft bluffs at Scarborough on Saturday morning. The body was recovered by » police party, and Mr H. J. Kerr, skipper of the Sumner lifeboat, at a spot which could be reached only by sea. Mr Watson’s car had been found abandoned in Whitewash Head read last Fridaymorning. between one haff and one mile from where the body was recovered. Air Kerr was asked by the police on Friday evening to help in a search of the rocky coastline of the area. He and his son, with Constable N. J. Stokes, set out in a dinghy at 8 am. on Saturday and found Mr Watson's body on the rocks at the foot of the cliffs about one hour and • half later. Mr Kerr originally intended to set out in the dinghy at 6 a.m„ but the choppy seas at the time, and hazard of approaching close to the rocks, caused the search to be postponed for two hours. An inquest was held on Saturday evening, and was adjourned sins die after evidence of identification had been given.
