BRABIN CUP PLAYERS
Fast Scoring At Tokanui (N.Z. Press Association) TOKANUI. January 12. A combined Otago-Canter-bury Brabin Cup team made full use of a good pitch and a fast outfield, when it scored 359 runs in 210 minutes on the first day of its two-day match against a Te Awamutu-South Wakato-Putaruru combined eleven at the picturesque hospital ground at Tokanui today. Fine batting by Otago’s J Johnstone (85). G. Ingles (84) and K. Campbell (61) kept the score moving and runs flowed steadily throughout the innings. Losing its first three wickets for 7 runs, the Combined side was in trouble early and when M. Lester (Canterbury) came on, a further three wickets fell for 31 runs. Only a fighting 51 by the team’s captain. P Groom, took the score to 87. Following on. 248 runs behind. Combined did little better and at stumps was nine for two wickets. Scores:— Canterbury-Otago combined 359 (R. Mitchell 37. T. Underdown 21, J. Johnston 85. G. Ingles 84. K. Campbell 61: A. Smith four for 42) Te Awamutu-South WaikatoPutaruru corhbined 111 (P. Groom 21, A Smith 27: M. Lester six for 46, R. Paul three for 261 and nine for two (Lester two for nine).
