MELBOURNE, Jan. 5. Carlton and United Breweries, Ltd., the biggest Australian brewing enterprise. may make a takeover bid for Richmond Brewing Co. Pty., Ltd., according to the Melbourne “Age”. The general-manager of Carlton and United (Mr R. F. G. Fogarty) said last night, “If there is any likelihood of Richmond Brewing Co. being sold, we may be interested,” Mr Fogarty emphasised that an offer had not yet been made. At this stage, his group was simply having a look at the proposition, he said. It was too early to say whether a firm offer would be made. Mr Fogarty added. The Richmond Co, is understood to supply about 5 per cent, of the local market. The Carlton and United take-over interest is believed
to have been stimulated by a reported interest of the United Kingdom brewers, Charrington and Co., Ltd., in acquiring the Richmond Brewery and its 77 hotels throughout the state.
By taking over the brewing assets of Ballarat Brewing Co., in 1958, Carlton and United eliminated one its two remaining competitors in Victoria.
Last year Carlton and United made a successful take-over bid for Queensland Brewery. Ltd., in the face of a counter offer by Castlemaine Perkins, Ltd., of Brisbane.
