Roller Skating VISITORS’ SUCCESS
Free-Skating Titles
A smooth performance by the overseas skaters, D. Eley and Miss J. Nance (United States* and C. Organ and Miss J. Lowther (Australia), was a feature of the Pacific international free-skating fours competition when the international roller skating tournament was continued at Canterbury Court last evening.
The Americans and Australians, who had not met before this tournament, showed a good combination and understanding to win the Pacific title from two Canterbury pairs. Canterbury’s F. Britt, R Davies and Mesdames D. Dobson and R. Dawson, runners-up in the international event, took the New Zealand title. Miss V. Ballerini of Auckland won an exciting New Zealand juvenile girls’ 440 yards speed championship. Miss Ballerini was the winner by inches only from the Mount Wellington skater. Miss G. McCarthy, with Miss C. Lines of Papatoetoe third. The juvenile boys’ 440 yards speed championship showed one entrant in a class above all the others. This was L. Cameron, of Napier, who won by about 30 yards from M. Littlejohn of Milton. Cameron was not pressed at any stage, and his time at 60.2 sec was slower than that of Miss Ballerini.
