Welcome

One of the most welcome entrants at this tournament is J. E. Robson, w’hose record is certainly the best of any player in the championships. At the age of 35 he is the main threat to the younger players in the field even after a season's absence. He first won the national title in 1949 and again in 1952 and 1956. As well he has been runner-up five times, three of them to overseas players, has won the men’s doubles six times with four different partners, and the mixed doubles twice, both with his wife, Mrs H. Robson. Robson has been a fine member of New Zealand teams overseas. He was in the 1947, 1954 and 1957 Davis Cup teams and represented New Zealand in Australia in 1950, 1955 and 1956. He has reached the last 16 at Wimbledon and one of his best wins was in the Auckland invitation tournament of 1959 when he beat the Australian, R. Emerson, in the final.
