(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 3.

Sydney, San Francisco’s only male koala bear, may have deserted its unborn child, according to the director of the city’s Fleischhaker Zoo, Mr Carey Baldwin. The zoo has offered a 100 dollar reward for the koala which disappeared from its cage some time on Monday night. He is the ‘‘husband" of three female koalas.

“If Sydney walked out. he’s deserting an unborn child,” Mr Baldwin said. “One of the females is carrying a baby.” If Sydney was kidnapped. Mr Baldwin said, he did not have much hope that he would be returned alive.

He said Sydney could die within a day or so if he did not have proper handling and a regular diet of a certain kind of eucalyptus leaf. The only other male koala in the United States is in a San Diego zoo.
