Women’s Softball Canterbury Adds To Successes

“The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN, January 4. Canterbury completed a clean sweep of the national women’s interprovincial softball tournament in Dunedin today. The Canterbury A team added the Bensel Cup to the NeW Zealand Softball Cup (won by the B team) and the Dusjin Cup for inter - club supremacy won by Monowai) when it comprehensively outplayed Auckland in the deciding game by 4 runs to 1.

The match was all over when Auckland was 3 up 3 down in the seventh for the fifth time in the game—ample testimony to the accuracy and hostility of Makinson’s pitching. Outstanding for Canterbury were a pitcher, Makinson and the catcher, Beal- Teammates m the successful Monowai combination earlier in the tournament, they had a fine understanding and can take much of the credit for Canterbury’s decisive win The short-stop, L. Parish, threw accurately—especially to first base—and she was a major reason why only two Auckland batters were able to get past first base. For Auckland, the pitcher, C. Chapman, was always steady, but did not seem to trouble the Canterbury batters as much as Makinson worried the Auckland players, although there appeared little difference in their pitching. But the Auckland fielding did not reach the heights of the Canterbury fielding Numerous unnecessary errors allowed the Canterbury batters to steal runs they should not have been allowed and several simple catches went to ground Leading 2-0. Canterbury went into the fourth with the title well in sight. But good pitching by C Chapman, aided by some good catching made Canterbury 3 up 3 down. In the fourth innings Auckland opened its score when A. Lineham (short stop) hit a brilliant home run to reduce the deficit to one run. Both sides were 3 up 3 down in the fifth innings. In the sixth only three Auckland batters appeared on the plate and Canterbury also failed to score, having two runners on the bases when the third bats woman was out Decided Game The seventh innings virtually sealed the game With the catcher N Beal ‘ allowed to second base through Auckland errors, the captain N Johnson hit a tong home run and both came home, to give Canterbury an almost unnassailable 4-1 lead

Canterbury began the day with a two-point lead over Auckland and Wellington. The latter drew level when it had a narrow win over Waikato in the morning, and Canterbury went into its game with Auckland in an unbeatable position. The game was virtually decided by a home run hit by H John-

son. the Canterbury captain, which gave the red-shirts two runs and a lead of 4-1 with only one Auckland innings remaining. The first Innings of both sides In the Auckland-Canter-bury game were scoreless Canterbury going out with loaded bases. Auckland with one runner on. The second innings was also scoreless. This time Canterury had two runners on the bases but Auckland was 3 up 3 down Canterbury opened its account in the third H. Johnson came home and she was followed by the pitcher. B Makinson on a sacrifice by J Hudson Canterbury's fielding and Makinson’s superb pitching again proved too much for Auckland in its third and the side was again 3 up 3 down.
