Terako Queen’s Easy Win

(From Our Ouns Reporter)

GREYMOUTH, January 4.

Terako Queen, a weak ninth in the Victoria Park Handicap earlier in the day after breaking at the start, led all the way for an easy three lengths win in the Paparoa Handicap, the last race at Greymouth today.

Terako Queen, an aged bay mare owned by Mr T. C. Dickson and trained at Templeton by her driver, J. A. Carmichael, beat the favourite, Lightning Lil, and Montaigne. Terako Queen began well and was soon in front. At the mile she was a length clear of Bob Hanover, which was followed at length intervals bv Montaigne and Lightning Lil. Sea Chase was also handy. This order was more or less unchanged at the half-mile and coming to the straight Terako Queen was still a couple of lengths clear. At the turn it was obvious she would not be caught, and she went on down the straight to win at ease. Three lengths away there was a close battle for second between Lightning Lil and Montaigne, which were separated by half a head. Contribute, a stable-mate of Lightning Lil, was two lengths away, fourth. Fifth after a gap was Bob Hanover, which stopped quickly over the last furlong. Next, at intervals, were Sea Chase. Charles Junior, and Toll Call. The latter two broke at the start. All-The-Way Win After being out by about 10 lengths a couple of furlongs from the start, Lady Verna was untroubled to hold her lead all the way in the Gladstone Handicap. She beat Medieval by five lengths at the finish, with the closest of the others, Young Henry, well beaten in third place, 12 lengths away. Medieval, which gradually made up ground after breaking early in the race, was only two or three lengths behind Lady Verna coming to the home turn, and looked to have a good chance of catching her when he broke again. Young Henry was second nearly all the way, but tired over the last three furlongs. Gleaning, another which broke early, took fourth from Regal Trick by half a head. She was eight lengths behind Young Henry and the others were even more soundly beaten. Astralight Wins Lady Verna tried hard for her second win of the day in the Sumner Handicap, the fifth race, but was caught and passed a few yards from the post by Astralight. Rehandicapped to 36 yards for her win earlier in the Gladstone Handicap, Lady Verna began better than most of the others, and reached the lead soon after the start. After half a mile she was three lengths clear of Gleaning. Astralight and Young Henry were six lengths away and the others were well back. Lady Verna continued past the half-mile and was three lengths clear of Gleaning coming to the straight. Astralight had gradually improved and was just behind. Gleaning was beaten at the furlong and Lady Verna looked set for a second easy win. Then Astralight began to gain rapidly. Lady Verna’s trainerdriver, N. L. Berkett, urged her on vigorously, but she was finished 20 yards from the post. • Astralight won by a length and a half. Gleaning was third eight lengths away, two lengths clear of Young Henry. Huntingdon was the best of the others, all of which were well beaten.
