N.Z. HONEY MARKET

Bank Reviews

Prospects

“The importance of beekeeping to the New Zeeland economy is not widely appreciated,” says the A.N.Z. Bank January “Quarterly Survey.” “its real contribution springs directly from the value of honey and beeswax produced for sale abroad and local consumption, and indirectly from the provision of pollinating services for pastures, crops and fruit growing.” The bafik goes on to say of the industry: “Its value to the orchardi'St, gardener, vegetable grower and farmer is now becoming more widely known, and many farmers are paying for hives to be placed near their pastures to ensure that effective pollination takes place. "South Island beekeepers produce 80 per cent, of the white honey produced in New Zealand. This honey, referred to as 'white clover,’ is keenly sought by overseas countries, and is particularly popular in the United Kingdom where it commands premium prices.” Useful Contribution

Referring to the export of honey,‘the article pointe out: “A demand for packed honey has been built up in Australia, Singapore, Malaya and Kenya, and sales to these countries, while small in relation to other export commodities, are nevertheless providing a useful contribution to overseas earnings. . . . The need to maintain high quality in honey for export is recognised, and all honey exported is subject to Government grading. “The European Economic Community is easily the world’s largest importer of honey. ... A major consideration concerning future prospects for honey export is the possible implication of United Kingdom participation in tthe Common Market,” says the bank. However, “export prospects should not be marred by any major problems, as far as premium grades are concerned. “Efforts have also been made to secure additional markets in oversea countries outside the traditional buyers, and results to date have been encouraging,” states the Bank.
