ANTARCTIC PARTY
No Word For 14 Days
No word has been received during the last 14 days from the University of Michigan party led by Dr. C. W. M. Swithinbank which is on a glaciological survey along the western and southern margins of the Ross Ice Shelf. If the party did not communicate with McMurdo Sound in the next few days an aircraft would be sent out to see whether the party was in any trouble, said Mr E. Goodale. United States Antarctic Research Programme representative in New Zealand, yesterday. Mr Goodale said that there were no fears for the safety of the party. Dr. Swithinbank was an experienced leader, and the probable reason for the party’s silence was that the radio had been damaged. The members of the party are Dr. Swithinbank and Messrs H. Linder, J. Olson, A. S. Rundle, and T. E. Taylor.
Dr. Swithinbank’s party left McMurdo Sound early in December. It is thought to be at the Robert Scott glacier, about 600 miles from McMurdo Sound. When it left McMurdo Sound it moved in an arc towards the Robert Stott glacier, and will have covered about 800 miles.
