Wickets Fall Quickly In Auckland-Central Match

(New Zealand Press Association.

AUCKLAND, January 4. A lively pitch, certainly the greenest ’‘green-top” at Eden Park for many years, and accurate seam bowling kept scoring low when the Auck-land-Central District! Plunket S .ield match began there today Auckland had some cause for ioy when its moderately strong bowling attack bundled out Central for 169 just before afternoon tea. But the joy soon turned to sorrow when Auckland lost a wicket at 15, another at 20. ai c yet another at 22, all to th- excellent bowling of B V Hampton, at a cost of 4 runs

Auckland recovered somewhat to 67 for four, a"d then to 84 for four, until with what became the lar* ball of the day D Kinsella bowled I A. Green and Auckland was half out for 84, still 86 runs short of a first innings lead.

Fifteen wickets fell during the day for only 253 runs, and only 12 minutes were lost to the showers which spoiled some of the cricket before lunch.

Central owed its useful score mainly to B. Cougdon. the Nelson batsman, who battled patiently and doggedly for nearly three hours He came to the crease when Central was one for four and left when the score was 121 for seven. But for Congdon’s dogged innings of 67 Central might have been out for under 100.

Congdon had good support from P. Maunder, although he scored only 4, in the recovery, and after lunch from I. B. Leggat, who scored 21. mostly from heavy blows to leg. Toward the end Hampton played some good drives and I. A. Colquhoun scored 22 very quickly in a “1-run stand for the last wicket

W. B. Sorman took the valuable wickets of the Central openers, G. E. Lowans and L B. Reade, at little cost and bowled his in-swingers very well. R. S. Cunis relished the lift from the pitch, too, and in the middle of the innings J. M. Mclntyre, the 17-year-oid left-arm spinner, took four excellent wickets, including that of Congdon.

Mclntyre Successful Mclntyre was able to turn the ball quite sharply and had four wickets for 27 before Colquhoun and Kinsella lit out at him near the end. S. G. Gedye opened the Auckland innings with a four from the first ball, and when he soon hit another it seemed as if Auckland was to have yet another fastscoring start. However, R. M. Harris, the big-hitter of the previous games, was most uncertain facing Hampton, who could cut the bal’. off the pitch at medium-pace. Harris, who scor<*d one run in 15 minutes, spooned an easy catch to Lowans at extra cover. Gedye soon went to Hampton, edging one to Colquhoun, and when Congdon caught R. W. Morgan at second slip, Auckland was 22 for three. W. R. Playle and P. P. W. Morris, however, handled the swing of Hampton and Kinsella mo“e sensibly and took the score past 50 when Colquhoun brought on the spinners. L Flummery bowled to a packed off-side field and then made a ball drift back to bowl Playle. Morris continued confidently, but Green was never very comfortable and Kinsella ended the day by uprooting his leg stump.

The pitch promises to remain lively for the rest of the match and the medium-fast bowlers are already making

dents in the surface. Batting will be a hazardous business, and there promises to be a definite decision, with the odds slightly favouring Central at this stage. Scores:
