O. Sarapu Ties For Second (NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 4. G. G. Haase, a Dunedin schoolteacher, with eight points, won by half a point the New Zealand championship in the national chess tournament which ended at Wellington tonight. O. Sarapu, Auckland, who has six times held the cup. tied for second place with A. Feneridis, Wellington, and J R. Phillips, Auckland. They had 7j points each. Sarapu drew with R. A. Court, Wellington, after a strenuous battle which, if won, would have placed him equal first and. if lost, would have left him third. Third place is shared by Court and R. J. Sutton, Wellington, with six points each. B. Cuthbert, R. M. O’Callahan and Z. Frankel, all of Wellington, have five points each. K. M. Okey (New Plymouth), has 4J, B. J. Halpin (Wellington) 3, and O. N. Thomson (Wellington) 1. Final round results were:— Haase lost to Phillips. Okey drew with Thomson. Halpin lost to Feneridis. Court drew with Sarapu O'Callahan lost to Frankel. Cuthbert drew with Sutton The senior reserve championship was won by D J Cooper (Auckland) with 10 J points Christopher Evans, aged 13. of Te Awamutu. is second with 9 points, ann K. M.
