SHAG ROCK RESCUE
Four Caught
In Undertow
Three children and their mother, who got into difficulties while swimming near Shag Rock and were swept out of their depth, were rescued by two men yesterday afternoon. One of the children who was in difficulties called for help, and his mother, leaving the other children near the shore, dashed out to save the boy, although she could not swim.
Mr M. Hallem, who was sunbathing nearby, rescued the boy, aged 10, and a girl, aged six, and Mr J. Pickering of Sumner brought the mother to safety. Mr Hallem then went out again and brought in the other child. Mr Pickering was driving past in his car when he heard the calls for help. No resuscitation was necessary.
Mr Pickering said the beach patrols advised persons not to swim near Shag Rock, especially on the outgoing tide when there was a strong under-tow. He said that two notices warning bathers that the beach at this place was unsafe had apparently been removed, possibly by vandals.
