PAIRS BEGIN AT N.Z. BOWLS TOURNEY

Play Affected By High Wind

Christchurch was not a very pleasant place yesterday for the 1600 bowlers who began play in the pairs championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament.

An occupational hazard, a cool, gusty easterly wind, played tricks on all the 26 greens and the 600 pairs who survived—2oo two-lifers and 400 one-lifers—must have welcomed the close of play. Even the champions found the conditions difficult, especially in the afternoon, and the 200 who did not play well enough to keep their lives could, with some justice, point the finger of blame at the high wind.

Surp. isingly enough there were few real upsets which suggests that luck—and there ■was a lot of it in Christchurch yesterday—was on the side of the champions for once. True, several of the better known players lost a life, but they are certainly in the running and undoubtedly intend to remain there till the end The title-holders. N. Posa and M. Vulinovich (Oratia) w’on both their games, the first after rather a keen struggle against W. L. Castle and D. R. Leggat (Fendalton), 18-15, and the second more easily against D. C. H. Gill and W. R Fellowes (United, Nelson), 18-9. J. H. Rabone (Auckland), the single* champion, who has received one or two frights this tournament had another close shave when he beat R. H. Cowies (Ashbury) by a point, but he had a runaway victory in his next game. Easy Wins R. McDonald (Onehunga), a two-lifer in the singles, had the veteran F. Livingstone as his lead and this combination had two easy win* against F. Spencer (Papanui) and P. B Devereux (Kaikorai); and M Borich (Hamilton), who had the misfortune to lose both lives in the singles, had a change of fortune, winning both his matches with consumate ease Borich's form and that of his lead. W Kemp could not be faulted at times Borich beat R. Lulham (Christchurch), 22-10 in a game ■which brought out the best in the Hamilton pair. Time and again Borich dashed the hope* of Lulham with perfect running shot* and drives. Borich certainly appears to have found his old skill. This time the bad luck of Dalmatia fell upon the sturdy shoulders of M. A. Marinovich (Oratia). A pairs champion 13 years ago but still a canny player, he went down in his first game to N. Boydell (Christchurch Working Men’s Club), 22-19, and in his second game to H. C. Basher (Rangiora). Marinovich was level at the fourteenth head, 12-all in his first match, but Boydell went ahead after some skilful drawing. In his second game Marinovich had a five and six scored against him and that was enough to take the heart out of any player but a Dalmatian. At the end Marinovich came back in typical style, but, alas, in vain, for he lost by a point, 18-17. Giant Brothers HAD. Doig and his brother B. Doig, of Rakaia had not decided that Rugby was a young man's game it is doubtful if tlie durable W. P. O'Neil (Carlton) and his efficient lead, G. Gifford would have had the distinction of beating them 27-16 in an interesting tussle. The brothers, who dwarfed every, one on the green, played representative football for Mid-Canterbury for many years, B. Doig for 15 years and A. D. Doig for 10. It is a remarkable record, indeed and if they played their football as well a* they did their bowls then Mid-Canterbury must have been fortunate. The Doigs never gave up and even a six against them on the fourteenth end failed to upset their even humour They never expected to win for it was obvious that the Auckland pair was very much in form. But the game w as always full of incident and humour O'Neil went on to beat J Stringer (Caversham) 22-7 in a game noted for the excellent drawing of the winners O’Neil and Gifford, who proved a most sagacious lead, were in superb form. The losing of both live* tn the single* did not appear to have any visible effect on the playing of E P Exelby 'Frankton Junction), a former pairs title holder and Emp re Games gold medallist in 1950. Exelbv had an easy victory over E. A. Fox (Sydenham). 32-15 and a one point win over A. H Wotton (Beckenham). 17-16. Exelby was playing very well indeed in his second match and it savs much for the quality of Wotton** play that he held the game to such a close margin Well-merited Win The pairs winner of 1953. R. E. Pilkington (Wellsford) and hi* lead. H W Neal were not extended to beat E E Anderson (Woolston) in their first game, but N Blakeway (Fendakon) gave him many anxious moments in the next The Fendalton lead. Marshal] completely overshadowed Neal and thi* gave Fendalton a comfortable lead After the turn of the board, however. Fendalton lost touch for a while and Pilkington welcoming the change in fortune*, took five shot* and the lead But thi* only inspired Fendalton to nobler effort* and after some precision drawing Blakeway gained a well-merited win, 22-21. There was a minor surprise

when the untried Halswell pair, D. N. H. Watson and W. B. Templeton, vanquished the father and son combination of D. R. Buchan and M. R. Buchan (Tui Park), 19-17. The Halswell pair won their second game and so joined the lucky band of two-lifers In another family affair, E. H. Crowley and his brother. G. A. Crowley, winners of two national fours titles, came through their two games with comparative ease by beating R. Jones (Opawa), 24-15, and R. J. Wild (Waimate Services), 19-14. Light relief to the general run of close encounters was provided by the game between the two-lifers, N. Falloon and J. Lyell (Beckenham), and D. Thomson and E. Bateman (Sydenham), at the Edgeware green. Try as he could, Bateman could not open his account in the face of the cool competence of Falloon and Lyell and by the thirteenth head the Beckenham pair led 27-0. But after scoring a point on the next end Bateman evidently felt his honour had been saved, for he promptly conceded the game to Lyell and lived to fight another day. It was as well that the formidable Auckland pair, N. Donaldson and J. H. Rabone, changed their tactics from driving to drawing in their match against H. C. Alloo and R. H. Cowles (Ashbury), for by the tenth head the Aucklanders were down by six points to 12 and were facing possible defeat Rabone. noted for his driving, was often astray; indeed, he missed many more than he hit By changing to steady drawing, Rabone altered the complexion of the game. The Ashbury pair was passed and. with one head left to play, was behind 15-18. A valiant effort by Cowles on the last end was rewarded by only two shots and Rabone had won, 18-17. Yesterday's results were:— SYDENHAM GREEN Section IM First Round—Fox (Linwood) 26. Smith (Onehunga) 10; Brown (Akaroa) 18. Falloon (Balclutha) 12; Crawford (Titahi Bay) 20.
