Fine Scoring In North Island

The Chrietchurch professional golfer, R. J. Charles, has been showing remsrkable form since he began a series of exhibition and sponsored matches, and although at Nelson yesterday the lack of quality of the greens was partly responsible for his worst score of the tour, he is. after six rounds, 16 strokes below scratch. At Mount Maunganui, In the first of the Craven A Filter challenge matches with R R Newdlck, Charles was round In 68, five under scratch, and a course record. At Tauranga. playing an exhibition with a professional. J. A. Paterson. Charles was 67. four under, ana equalled the eourae record At Rotorua, in another exhibition match with E Fennell, a professional, Charles scored 72, two over scratch. At Taupo. Charles was 66. six under scratch, and at Matamata, 1b his 'sat game with Newdlck. he won 8 and 7 and scored 65. seven under par, breaking the course record by four shots. Charles won all five of these matches. At Nelson yesterday. Charles began a three-match series with R. C. Murray, the South Island champion, and won 2 and 1 with a round of 75, tour over par. Murray was 74. Charles four-potted one green and three-putted another. The second match of the series will be played at Shirley on Saturday, and the third at Dunedin on Sunday.
