HAWKE’S BAY REGIMENT
Winning Of Duke’s Challenge Shield (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER. January 3. A team from the first Hawkes Bay Regiment has won the Duke of Edinbureh Challenge Shield in the 1961 contest among territorial units of which the Duke of Edinburgh is colonel-in-chief. The regiment was advised of its success today in a message from Buckingham Palace The Hawke’s Bay Regiment's team won the shield from many of the elite regiments of tire British and Commonwealth armies "We are delighted at our success,” said the commanding officer, Li catena nt-Colon el N. M. Notching, today. The Duke of Edinburgh Trophy and the Challenge Shield contest were instituted by the Duke in May, 1957 The trophy is awarded to the winning regular unit and the shield to the winning territorial unit.
