Sale Of Milk Company Shares

Sir, —Disillusioned Nationalist” asks if the Milk Consumers’ Protection Association has used pressure in the sale of these shares. The answer is no; but our criticism, published in the press on March 13, 1953, is worth publishing again because the Christchurch City Council has taken eight years to find out what we have always known —that the replacement of the milk treatment station would make heavy demands on the public purse later on. This association has always opposed the council's entry into the milk industry. Neither do we approve of monopolies. The democratic method should be for the Christchurch Milk Company to be under public consumer ownership. For instance, 60,000 £5 shares, held by small subscribers, would caneel outstanding debts, eliminate a monopoly, curb the dictatorial powers of the milk board, and make an honourable right of choice possible. The City Council’s price is not excessive, but its policy is wrong.—Yours, etc., G. J. WATSON. Hon. Secretary, Milk Consumers’ Protection Association. January 2, 1962.
