THEFT OF SAFE
Careful Work By Intruders
(N.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 3. A safe holding a considerable sum of money was taken from the office of the Tasman Hotel in New Plymouth last night. The police were still searching for the safe this afternoon. The theft, which occurred after 11 o’clock last night was discovered at 7.15 a.m. today by a housemaid. The intruders—police say there must have been more than one because of the weight of the safe—carefully removed louvres from a lounge window to break into the hotel. They walked 'hrough the lounge and down a passage to the office. They got through two locked doors to tire inner office without forcing either door.
They silently moved furniture, including a fairly large desk, to get at the safe. Apparently using two chairs from the lounge, they lifted the safe back through the lounge and out double glass doors, which they unlocked from the inside, into a beer garden. Then they dragged the safe to a gate some 20 or 30 yards away. Tyre marks outside the gate indicate a vehicle was waiting to take the safe away.
