Two Surprise Defeats
(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. January 3.
At the opening of the South Island croquet championships today a morning drizzle made the lawns heavy and conditions uncomfortable. The surprise defeat of the New Zealand women’s champion, Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt) by Mrs C. J Pomeroy (Christchurch). 28-23. was a feature of the day. In the men's championship match between C. Paynter (Lower Hutt) and G. Broadhead (Timaru) the latter also scored a surprise. but welldeserved win. Results:—
Championship Doubles First Life.—First round: Mesdames L. G. Bishop (Ashburton) and C. C. Wilson (Timaru) beat C J. Pomeroy and Mrs Pomeroy (Christchurch). 26-3: L. Middlemiss and Mrs Middlemiss (Pukekohe) beat Mesdames S. Skelton and J. Johnston (Reefton). 38-9: H. Ford (Wellington) and Mrs A G Rawlinson (Methven 1 beat H Darby and Mrs W. Walter (Timaru). 26-21. Second Round. Middlemiss and Mrs Middlemiss beat Ford and Mrs Rawlinson 36-19: Mrs H. Dempsey (Waimate) and A J Bonisch (Corel beat W. H. Kirk and Mrs Kirk (Christchurch) 26-12: Mesdames W. L. Salton (Oamaru) and L Restall (Oamaru) beat Mrs R. Henn. (Christchurch) and A. Bona’r (Christchurch) 26-6 Men's Championship First Life.—First round: C. G. Broadhead (Timaru) beat C. Paynter (Lower Hutt) 26-22 Women's Championship First Life.—First round: Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt) best Mrs F Orwin (Wellington). 36-22. Second round: Mrs Pomeroy beat Mrs Jarden. 36-23.
