Good Tennis By J. Cullington

QNE of the best performances by a local player in this week's Canterbury lawn tennis championships was that of the junior, J. Cullington. in his defeat of G. Campbell (Auckland) in the first round of the men's singles. Campbell is one of the leading Auckland players, and he partnered I. S. Crookenden in men's doubles in the major tournaments last season. In his match this week. Cullington played a steady game, after losing the first set 6-2, to win the second and third both at 6-4.

Although still a junior. Cullington has not been able to force his way into the Slazenger Shield team this season. Last year he was a member of the strong South Brighton team in the senior reserve grade and this season, playing in the senior men’s grade for Elmwood. Cullington has done well against

more experienced opponent* In last year'* Canterbury championships. Culling ton also recorded a good victory in the first round. This was over Manawatu's K. Baddiley, who was one of the players sponsored by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association.
