Closing The Gap
For years Americans dominated the sprints in international competition; for some reason conditions in the United States seemed to produce faster men. while Europe was the home of distance and middle-distance runners. Hold Fight Now European sprinters have almost closed the gap, With athletes such as V. Mandik (Czechoslovakia), M. Folk (Poland) and L. Berruti (Italy) returning excellent times for the 100 and 200 metres. Both Mandik and Foik recorded 10.2 sec for the 100 metres this season and 13 others, including five from Russia, recorded 10.3 sec. It suggests that America will have to fight hard to retain its traditional leadership in the short distances. But Americans must be pleased with the performances of D. Burleson and J. Beatty in the mile and 1500 metres. Burleson recorded 3min 57.65ec for the mile this season and Beatty returned a time only I.2sec slower.
