UNUSUAL WAVE
Eyewitness Account (N.Z Press Association) LEVIN, Dec. 29. Although police in Levin said this afternoon they knew nothing of a reported “wall of water” at Waiterere Beach last evening, one eye-witness claimed this afternoon that the boat which returned late to shore was hit by a fivefoot wall of water. The eye-witness, Mr L Price, said the boat appeared to be almost on its beam ends when the wave struck about 300 yards south of the main entrance to the beach. “The fishermen were both in their early twenties,” he said. “They were not hurt. "They managed to get their boat to shore under power from their outboard motor, but it took them 10 minutes to drain it There must have been 30 to 40 gallons of water in the boat” Mr Price said “TTiey did not mention their names But one said it was the biggest shock he had ever had.” The superintendent of the seismological observatory in Wellington. Dr. F F Evison, said this afternoon there could be no connexion between the unusual waves reported at Waiterere Beach and yesterday morning’s earthquake.
