Swimming DANN’S GOOD FORM

N.Z. Time By A. Harrow One New Zealand record and two Canterbury records were broken during the swimming carnival after the water polo match between Canterbury and Melbourne last evening at the Centennial Pool. The Melbourne swimmers, a little tired after the water polo, did not show their best form. Several Canterbury swimmers, however, returned some of their best times of the season. Swimming alone, A. Harrow broke the national boys’ under--14 record for the 220 yards backstroke by O.Ssec with his time of Jmin 49.45ec. Miss S. Nicholson broke Canterbury records in two events—the 55 yards freestyle and the 110 yards freestyle. Her times were 31.7 sec and S9.ssec. G Dann, the former national sprint champion, equalled the Canterbury record for the 110 yards freestyle. Dann has foregone pool swimming this season m favour of the surf, but after a warm-up in the water polo match, he made no race of his contest with R. Blair, and equalled the letter’s Canterbury record time of SO.Osec. There is some doubt whether there were enough timekeepers on Dann's swim to make the record time allowable. Dann showed very fine form in his decisive defeat of Blair in this race. Blair has been invited to compete agsinst the visiting Japanese swimmers this season on their Dominion tour. Dann beat Blair by two yards, with G. Stringer two yards further behind in third place. Dan also comfortably beat G. Le Cren in the 53 yards freestyle. In the backstroke race, G. Elmsley renewed his rivalry with W. Williamson, and proved himself superior on the evening over the 110 yards. He won by about 10ft. Results were:— 110 Yards Men’s Freestyle.— Section 1: G.
