When the Canterbury Lawn Tennis championships began at Wilding Park yesterday, the president of the Canterbury association and also of the New Zealand . association (Mr A. M. Hatch) was unable to attend to open the championships and give the address of welcome to visiting players. Mr Hatch was taken suddenly iH on Monday night and is a patient in Princess Margaret Hospital. Mr J. Mercer opened the tournament on Mr Hatch’s behalf.
