(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, December 26. The touring Australian Universities' cricket team finished the first day of play at Dunedin today in the fixture against Otago University in a strong position. „9 ta « o batted first and made 223. the largest total scored against the visitors on the tour so far. The Australians, after a fairly shaky start—the first two wickets fell cheaply—l 93 for tour at stumps. Features of the day’s play were Otago's batting before lunch which was taken with the score at one wicket for 119, a good break-through by the Australians J. Sangster and T. Lee immediately after lunch, and crisp batting by the Australian opener R. Grant and W Buekle in a third-wicket partnership. The pitch was easy paced and the only danger it presented to batsmen was the fact that the odd delivery was inclined to come through low. Otago began in handsome fashion with the openers. B. C. Adams and C. Childs, setting a pace of more than a run a minute against an Australian attack which then lacked any real hostility or guile. Childs was dismissed for 22 but Adams went on to make his half-century before lunch Both men were out in quick succession after the adjournment to the bowling oi medium - paced left - armer Sangster. He and Lee finished off the innings between them, showing much better form The Australians had early setbacks when the opener, K. Pearlman, was brilliantly caught behind for 5 and the new batsman, R. Peden, was out tor 14 But a punishing third wieket partnership between the other opener, R. Grant, who produced some good strokes in making his 75, and Buekle put the tourists back on top.
