MATERNITY PAVILION
“Need Is Less Urgent” There seemed no longer such an urgent need for the immediate provision of more maternity beds in Christchurch beyond the St. Helens Hospital extension now being built, the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) said yesterday in a report to the board. Although the maternity pavilion at the Princess Margaret Hospital had a high priority a year ago, the reduced stay of patients in hospital, the proposal to keep the Essex Hospital functioning, and tfie extension of St. Helens made the Princess Margaret pavilion less urgent, he said. “If this building at the Princess Margaret Hospital is delayed, the board will naturally be concerned at the increasing number of maternity beds in Christchurch not under its control, and discussions are taking place with the Health Department on this matter. In the present economic difficulties it is reasonable that only necessary building should be undertaken. Further developments are expected shortly."
