Sportsman's Notebook Speedboat Championship Regattas Widespread

Speedboat ehampionship events will be held on lakes, 'harbours and rivers throughout New Zealand over the ■Christmas-New Year holiday 'period and continue through to April. P Calvert in Susie Too raised the record for the 75 cubic inch V-bottom, inboard class from 5326 m.p.h to 54.13 m.p.h. * ¥ * Tramping In Alps Possibly die two most scenic ard varied regions of the South Island high country have been selected by the Christchurch Tramping Club fm this year’s Christmas trips. The trips will embrace mountains bounding the Southern Alps from Nelson province in the north to the fringes of Fiordland in the far south. The main party's trip In the Southern Alps wi|l be

a most comprehensive one. embracing several mountain valleys to the north and west of Lake Wakatipu between December 24 and January 7 The party will leave Glenorchy. at the bead of Lake Wakatipu to tramp up the Rees valley At the head of the valley they will cross a 4750 ft saddle and descend to the Dart hut. near the head of the Cart river. A side trip will be made to tbe actual head to view the' Dart glacier, before the party travels down th valley to the Paradise homestead The next stage of the trip will be up the Routeburn valley, over the Harris saddle (4970 ft into the Hollyford valley. The route then lies up the Hollyford valley to Lake Howden. and down the 25-mile long Greenstone valley to Elfin Bay. on the shores of Lake Wakatipu The stage along the upper Hollyford valley will be a highlight of the trip, with striking views of the Darran ranse and the many other tangled peaks of Fiordland The second party will cover an extensive area in the Lake Rotoroa and Spenser range regions from December 23 to January 13 Setting out from Tutaki. near Murchison, it will travel up the Tiraumea valley and over a saddle to the head of Lake Rotoroa. The party will tramp up the Sabine valley, taking the west branch to Lake Constance and a high col >f 6000 ft at the head which leads to the headwaters of the Waiau river on the eastern side .of the main divide A day’s travel will be made down the Waiau. and two or three days’ climbing of main peaks in the Soenser range. The party will then continue further down the Waiau. up the scenic Ada valley and over into the Matakitaki valley and out to Murchison. ¥ ¥ ¥ Canoeing A group of enthusiasts, mostly from the Auckland Canoe Club, are to spend the Christmas-New Year period canoeing down the Cluthj and southern Waiau rivers The party will comprise 12 (six boys and six girls) and intend canoeing from Wanaka to Cromwell on December 30. from Cromwell to Balclutha on January 2 to 5 and possibly to canoe the lower Waiau on January 7 to 9 Four two-man 17ft collapsible canoes will be used, and for the novices, a fourman rubber dinghy. ¥ ¥ ¥ Eisenhower Trophy Word has been received from the World Amateur Golf Council, that 29 countries have so far advised their intention to compete at the Kawana Fuji golf course. R J Butterfield, had a pleasant surprise when passing through Westport on his return to Greymouth with four other West Coast members of the Kiwi team which had recently toured England and France with much success There was a formidable party of Grevmouth people to welcome the tourists but there was omething missing as far as the veteran was concerned.
