RAW RUBBER ON FIRE
Brigade Saves Factory (N Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ Dec. 19. When raw rubber at the Reliance Tyre and Rubber Company's tyre relugging factory in Church street caught fire tonight, the general fire alarm sounded in Palmerston North for the first time since 1959. The alarm was sounded at 9.46 pm. The brigade thought the fire was considerably more serious than it proved to be. Three engines attended the blaze, including day leave staff of the brigade and voluntary members. When the brigade arrived, flames were high in the sky, and the smell of burning rubber filled the air. For a time the firemen were afraid that the flames might spread to a nearby petrol filling station, but the fire was soon under control. Rafters la the rubber room were badly charred. The fuH extent of the damage is not yet known.
