(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 20. The “black light” magic infra-red radiations were giving valuable weather information to the world *h rough the United States Tiros series of weather satellites. said the director of research for the New Zealand Meteo’ological Service. Dr J. F. Gabites. today. Clouds, sea and land masses all gave off infra-red radiations. which were recorded by instruments in the satellites and transmitted by tiny, high-nowered radios back to the United States, he said The tiny but far-ranging instruments probed ceaselessly day and night, "seeing" even in the dark, the different temperatures over which they passed, and from them the shape of cloud formations, their probable type and the weather they portended, said Dr. Gabites. He recently returned from overseas conferences on meteorology. including a "necial training period on United States weather satellite information “ft was a generous gesture by the United States to provide this most interesting and informative course It will be of great assistance in interpreting the data and making the best use of the material so generously made available by the United States.” said Dr. Gabites.
