CONVICTION FOR SPEEDING
Judge Upholds Traffic Officer (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 20. An appeal against a conviction in the Magistrate’s Court for exceeding 30 mp.b n a restricted area was dismissed by Mr Justice Spratt in a judgment delivered in •he Supreme Court today. His Honour said that the ony evidence offered was that of a traffic officer, who said he had checked a car driven by Oliver Lawrence Goldsmith for a distance of 300 yards by reference to his speedometer. His evidence stated that al! patrol cars were tested for speedometer accuracy. To his knowledge the speedometer was correct. He tendered. In evidence, a certificate for the particular car issued by the testing office. Goldsmith claimed that proof of the offence depended on direct proof of the accuracy of the speedometer and that the certificate was mere hearsay and should be rejected as such.
