Senate Lost
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA. Dec. 20. An independent candidate. Dr. R. J. D. Turnbull, today won the fifth seat in Tasmania for the Senate and made it impossible for the Menzies Government to control the Upper House. The best the Government can now hope for is a deadlocked Senate with 30 Government senators, 28 Labour, one Democratic Labour Party, and one Independent. One seat remains to be decided in Victoria and one in Queensland. Right - wing breakaway Labour candidates may win these vacancies leaving the state of the House: 28 Government, 28 Labour, two D.L.P., one Queensland. Labour Party (also Rightwing breakaway), and one independent A deadlocked Senate would further hamper the Government’s administration as ft has only a majority of two in the House of Representatives and this would be reduced to one after a Speaker was selected.
