Words Were ‘Warning’
(NZ-P.A--Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Dec. 20. The Melbourne evening newspaper, the ''Herald,” said editorially today that President Soekarno had stopped short in his speech yesterday of issuing his anticipated “final command” for Indonesian armed forces to wrest West New Guinea from Dutch control. “But.” it said, “his words were intended to be read by all interested countries, including Australia, as a final warning that he will launch an attack unless the territory is soon handed over to Indonesia.” The newspaper said that even if direct negotiations took place between Indonesia and Holland there could be no real hope they would avert an armed clash and at the same time preserve West New Guinea’s right to selfdetermination. “It has to be accepted, from President Soekarno’s uncompromising tone, that he will fight for the territory if it is not given to him.”
