ACCOMMODATION FOR SKI ERS

Private Ownership Of Huts Possible Privately owned accommodation may become associated with the North Canterbury Ski Club’s field at the Broken river basin, according to a report given by the president (Mr W. J. Wendelken). There had been a growing need among club members for smaller huts accommodating family or smaller groups of persons, said Mr Wendelken, and the provision of this type of hut would ease the strain on the club hut and club finances. By general agreement the matter had been deferred until the club’s main hut was built, and the policy of the Forest Service to smaller private huts near ski fields became clear. Both these barriers now appeared to have been removed, «aid Mr Wendelken, and the club was in a position to consider smaller huts to suit special needs. Club members interested in building their own accommodation were asked by Mr Wendelken to advise the club, giving the possible location, size, and time of construction. The Lands and Survey Department had approached all clubs on the Craigieburn range concerning the arranging of subdivision sites to cater for families wishing to provide their own huts, said Mr Wendelken. The department wished to know the type of subdivision preferred —one large, centrally situated one, or several smaller ones serving the separate fields. Certain minimum specifications would be insisted on to prevent the development of a "shack-town." Proposals had been submitted to the club, said Mr Wendelken, by a group of active club members for the formation of a separate Ski Touring Club, with the aim of hastening and ensuring the erection of suitable living huts on lower levels of the Broken river area. New Tow A new main tow is planned for the coming season and already a new 52 horse-power motor has been bought A 500-gallon tank is being obtained free for the storage of fuel. Permission has been given by the Forest Service for the club to extend its top road in to the basin, and a reply is now being awaited from the. contractors about the project Other plans include the provision of better off-road parking areas. Whenever possible, fortnightly working parties will be held during the summer, with the first In the New Year being on January 13 and 14. The club’s delegate to the Canterbury association for 1982 will be Mr D. Rogers, and Mr Wendelken will be president.
