STOWAWAYS IN MATUA
Bid To Make Shore Two stowaways aboard the island trader. Matua. made a bid for freedom when they climbed through the porthole of the ship’s mail room and leapt into the sea as the Matua entered Lyttelton Harbour on Tuesday mornins The stowaways, one a Tongan and the other a Fijian, had been discovered aboard when the vessel sailed from Suva, and had been more or less free on the trip south, working as required. They were locked up the evening before arrival as a precaution. When a member of the Matua’s crew noticed two persons in the water off Godley Head the alarm was given and the master (Captain F W. Bales) stopped the vessel and ordered the accident boat away The men were picked up and returned to ‘he’r '■onfinement. In addition to landing 42 passengers at Lyttelton, the Matua has 25 through passengers from Wellington and Auckland.
