BARMAIDS’ JOBS

Union, Hotels Set Conditions (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 12. Local committees comprising two employers’ representatives and two from the Hotel Workers’ Union will police the employment of barmaids in hotels throughout the country. Today Auckland members of the union held a stopwork meeting and endorsed the employment of barmaids under conditions agreed on after negotiations by the national secretary (Mr F. G. Young) with the Hotel Associr’ion. After the meeting, Mr Young said the licensee of a hotel would have to apply to the local committee for approval of the bars in which he wanted to employ barmaids The four-man local committee—they will be set up in all centres—will have to be notified as soon as a barmaid is employed. Mr Young said another condition would be that barmaids would not work in public bars, except at the discretion of the local committee. He did not think any public bars in city hotels would be suitable for girls *o work in. but there might be exceptions in country areas Mr Young said the selection of a barmaid would be un to the licensee of a hotel after obtaining approval from the local committee. Where a settlement was not 'reached between the local committee and licensee the matter would be referred *o the national disputes committee in the trade.
