Gabelle Shapes Well For Sprint

Gabelle, which will compete in the open sprint at Hororata tomorrow, showed she was fit when she ran the fastest half-mile at Riccarton yesterday. With G. W. Mein in the saddle she dashed over the last four of five furlongs in 49sec. C. McDonald will be her rider in the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap. Other Knight Memorial candidates to shape well in their final gallops were Safe Harbour, Coral Ring, Kastanea and Search Warrant.

Except for a two-sided gallop by Mataiuwhi and Harewood on the plough, none of the trialists to work before 7 a.m. could be timed because of a heavy ground fog. Once tliis cleared those working at speed had ideal conditions for galloping. Harewood (W. H. Beck) did well for a horse in his class to finish within half a length «f Matauwhi (W. Donovan) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 29 3-ssec. No sectional times could be taken. Bar Kochba (R. L. Browning) opened up a gap of about eight lengths on Methuselah (J. L. Coulter) and Hesus (G. W. Mein) in the first furlong of five on the plough, and still led by the best part of six lengths a furlong out but was shortening stride quickly near the end where Methuselah and Hesus had reduced his lead to two lengths. Bar Kochba ran the distance in Imin 4sec, the last three furlongs in 39sec. McCool on Plough The only other gallop on the plough was a solo effort by the Hororata Cup candidate, McCool. He worked away in a canter from the mile and a quarter and was not given more rein by his race rider C. McDonald, until he had reached the five furlong peg. He came home from there in Imin 4 2-ssec and ran his last three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Coral Ring (A. H. Eastwood), Quite Able (A. J Stokes) and Hand Over (C. T. Wilson) ran their seven furlongs in Imin 32 3-ssec and come home from the half-mile in 50sec. Coral Ring and Quite Able ran together a couple of lengths ahead of their stablemate, but Hand Over made ground quickly in the last few yards and they finished abreast. Gay Filou (G. W. Mein) and Ghana (R. B. Taggart) ran the last half-mile of an easy seven furlongs in 52sec. Gay Filou, which was shading his companion all the way down the straight, appeared to be doing his work very easily. Pulled Plate Cheyenne (C. T. Wilson) left his half-mile behind in 52 4-ssec. He would probably have done better but for pulling a shoe on his off fore-leg about half-way down the straight. Cheyenne, with other members of V. D. Clutterbuck’s team, will leave tomorrow week for Waimate, where he will complete his training for holiday racing. Burgos (P. J. Kempton) and Studio (O. Anning) worked seven furlongs leisurely the reverse way round on the course proper. Burgos broke away ahead of Studio, but they were together after a furlong. Studio ran back to the half-mile in 55 2-ssec and completed the seven furlongs in Imin 36 4-ssec. Burgos’s times were 57 sec and Imin 38 2- respectively. Studio and Burgos will be companions again in an exhibition gallop the reverse way round at Hororata on Saturday. This trial will take place after the third race. They are booked to leave for the north on Monday evening. Forsythe (G. R. Baldwin) was let off with an easy seven furlongs in Imin 37sec. his last half-mile in 53sec. Kastanea (G. R. Baldwin) and Derailment (O. Anning) sped over the last four of five furlongs together in 49 4-ssec. Tried in Hoed Search Warrant (L. McGuire) shaped well to leave his half-mile behind in 49 3- He had worked poorly in company on Tuesday but put much more dash into his effort yesterday when tried in a hood. Candida (M. J. Skelton) worked at three-quarter pace from the six furlongs to the half-mile and came home from there in 52 2-ssec. On Account (D. Hadfield) shaped well to finish within half a length of his open class stablemate Quick Time (B. Collins) after running in from the half-mile in 51 2-5 sec. Llantana (M. J. Skelton) led Royal Bag (O. Anning) by half a length at the end of their 51 3-ssee half-mile. Llantana had a slight lead on her companion practically throughout the gallop. Abou Ben Adhem was keen to increase the pace in his run over half a mile, but G.

R. Baldwin managed to restrain him to 53«ec. Belleville (C. McDonald) was only allowed to run at speed in the straight. She ran three furlongs in 39sec. Mhor (D. N. Hadfield) was shading Paua (P. J. Kempton) at the end of their halfmile in 50 2-ssec. Porridge (L. McGuire) did not have much in reserve at the end of his half-mile in 53 3-ssec. This head-strong maiden has ideas of trying to run the whole circuit at speed and bolted aw*ay from the crossing. It took his rider a couple of furlongs to steady him down. Rustle took charge of her light-weight rider. L. Williams. soon after the start of her 50 4-ssec half-mile and half-way through the gallop had opened a big lead on her stablemate, Delaware (O. Amning). The latter made ground near the end. but he was still three lengths behind Rustle at the post.
